Each of the chapters begins with a short collection of sayings organized around a particular theme (prayer, temptation, charity, self-control, endurance, simplicity, silence, and solitude). Then follows a short exposition of the theme, points to consider, a poetic meditation, related scriptural texts, and questions. An introduction to the book discusses the spirituality of the desert monastic tradition, the setting in Egypt, and how to use the book with a group. Excellent for Lent.
