Plot

Jay Kesler is known as a "youth expert." The father of three children, who are now all grown and married, he has an acute awareness that parents of teens need help that is especially geared to their situation. Jay is president of Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, where he and his wife reside. The author's many insights helping your teenagers where they are now (not "this is what you should have done when you were younger"), how to "de-parent" (the key to the whole ball game), how to deal with the teenage drive for independence (often mistaken for irresponsibility, disrespect or disregard for others), how to communicate (or at least establish grounds for peace talks), establishing house rules that everyone can live with (so you can be a parent not a cop), ways to share spiritually (without getting the "Oh no, not another sermon" look), building your teenager's self-esteem (and maybe your own, too). The author doesn't believe he has all the answers to rearing teenagers. No one does. But he may be able to give you some good ideas that can make life much more livable with that person in your home who is too big to spank.
