Postmaster Philippe Abrams (Kad Merad) fakes a handicap attempting to get a transfer from Salon-de-Provence to an office on the Mediterranean to appease his depressed wife Julie (Zoe Felix). When his deception is discovered Philippe is banished to the dreary town of Bergues in Northern France. Upon arriving Philippe must stay with coworker Antoine Bailleul (Dany Boon), whom he finds disturbing and the townspeople unsophisticated. However, Philippe soon discovers that Bergues is an extremely pleasant place with generously warm people. Philippe writes Julie about his happiness, but, she doesn’t believe him. Philippe resorts to telling her what he thinks she wants to hear. Julie heads to Bergues to rescue Philippe. Philippe gets the people to cover for his lies when she arrives. Julie discovers the truth and she begins to see Bergues as Philippe does and agrees to stay. Meanwhile, Antoine is having problems with his girlfriend Annabelle Deconninick (Anne Marvin) because Antoine’s mother (Line Renaud). So with some urging from Philippe, Antoine professes to his mother, his love for Annabelle and his desire to move. Antoine mother couldn’t be happier at the news. Three years later Philippe receives a transfer south leaving in tears.
