Updated edition, 2012, INCLUDES DVD of one-hour and 30-min. documentary film based on the book, with interviews with survivors and soldiers and music by blues legend Ronnie Earl (a son of survivors). This book (and the film) has just been accepted into the Reading, Mass. middle and high schools. A three-year project, the book received a 2004 Massachusetts Cultural Council/Brookline Arts Commission grant. It contains 30 stories of Holocaust survivors and WWII liberating soldiers, as well as poetry, essays by community leaders, resources and photos. It is the only such compilation of Boston-area people and includes the stories of Stephan Ross, Sonia Weitz z"l, Israel Arbeiter, Samuel Bak, Rosian Zerner and others. "I Refused to Die" was featured on the April 26 Channel 2/44 (WGBH) "Greater Boston with Emily Rooney" and WBUR's "Here and Now" (NPR)
