Notes

This is a fantastic book for middle schoolers who are studying or are interested in the Holocaust. I read it as a 7th grader, and found it to be captivating. The author enables the reader to identify with the heroines and to feel their fear and their terror throughout their experience. It's the story of a German girl living with her relatives in East Germany. She discovers that two young Jewish girls are hidden in the attic. At first she fears them a bit, but soon becomes their friend and confidante. The story progresses toward the girls' imminent escape attempt across the border. Well written, and will hold a young reader's attention.
