No nation in our time can remain an island unto itself. In writing a book about the dangerous cross-currents of prejudice disturbing the mainstream of democratic life in the United States, we found, when tracing them to their source, that these currents frequently reach us from distant lands. Tides that rise in Germany and the Middle East seriously affect our political life at home. Thus, while many pages are devoted to the German scene and to the Middle East, this is, in fact, a book about the United States.
