In the first two chapters of this work Jacob Neusner explains why he considers Heschel the greatest Jewish thinker of the twentieth century. He points to his profundity in thought and his great mastery of the Jewish sources. He also speaks of his Menschlichkeit and the special ethical quality which served as example and inspiration to his students. According to Neusner Heschel did not attempt a dry formula dogmatic theoretical philosophy but one which those starting with little Jewish learning could come to comprehend and be moved toward 'Sinai' through.
The second part of the work consists in excerpts from Heschel's work. Heschel is not simply a profound thinker but a poetic and moving one.
