Plot

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4 Yossi's moral development continues in this third volume in Chaikin's series. Here Yossi learns in school that when a good deed is done, God makes an extra angel, and he tries to put his new knowledge into practice without truly understanding the lesson. When his little sister is sick, Yossi is determined to help God along so that an extra angel will cure Rivkaleh. When the plan backfires, the wise and patient rebbe helps him learn that good deeds must come from the heart. Once again, Chaikin has taken a simple moral lesson and developed it into a warm and amusing story peopled with likable characters and with a well-integrated sense of setting. She maintains the quality of the series, and the story has universal appeal while continuing the introduction of the Chasidic way of life. Yossi Tries to Help God can be read on its own without having read the other two titles. Micki Nevett, Temple Beth Emeth, Albany, N.Y.
