Plot

A fascinating book. "Faith in Zionism brought about the restoration of the Third Jewish Commonwealth; the State of Israel, a dream cherished for many centuries, a reality after that faith was put to a test in the last seven decades. Such a faith predominated the life of Morris Catchman. It guided him throughout his early years in Europe and sustained him in his later years in America. It prompted him to become a dedicated Zionist and devote a great deal of his life to the welfare of the Jewish People." Catchman arrived at Ellis Island in 1920 and went on to become a prominent businessman (Superior Mattress and Furniture Company) and Zionist in Houston, Texas. "As early as 1941 we held demonstrations against the Nazis, advocating boycotts of Nazi goods and calling attention to the activities of the German-American Bund. We brought to Texas Dr. Israel Goldstein and other National figures to address mass meetings. With our entry into the war on December 7, 1941, anti-German action was no longer necessary. Now, we thought, our Government will take some action regarding the plight of European Jewry. Great Britain will now be urged to withdraw the 'White Paper,' and allow Jews entry into Palestine. We were mistaken. No help came forth. All our appeals to President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull were of no avail."
