Plot

Novel about the disintegration of a German-Jewish family and the German nation as a whole during the 1920s, through World War II, and into the Holocaust. Having escaped Treblinka, narrator Henrich Hartstein recounts the events of his life. He reflects on the nature of Germany as a spawning ground for the Holocaust, the hesitation of many to flee before it was too late, and larger theological issues.
