Majdanek was the first large Nazi concentation camp to be liberated by the Soviet army. The unexpected attack did not leave the camp management time enough to destroy the evidence of thecommitted crimes: gas chambers, crematoria, supplies of cyclon B gas, colelc tive graves, some amount of doucments, shoes and clothing of the victims, camp buildings and insalments. In October 1944 the Polish Committee of National LIberation resolved to create Majdanek State Museum on the site of the former camp.
