In an age of industrialization and technology, man is becoming further and further removed from his natural surroundings. Without a doubt, the achievements of science in which we so much glory have exacted a price--the increasing alienation of the human being from the world around him, so that the man who operates even the most beneficial of machines can become a mere button pusher a sort of machine himself.
Of all the festivals of the Jewish calendar, kit is perhaps Sukkot that stresses most the idea of nature. The Jew is commanded to go out and live in narual surroundings for the duration of the festival. Even the city family is obliged. One result of the observance of Sukkot must surely be an increased awareness of the natural world and a very desirable dimunition of man's conceit that his it the master of all.
