I believe that the approach in teaching customs and ceremonies to the Jewish child must be akin to that used by my grandfatheras he unfolded to me the rich romance of an Elijah's cup. This volume represent my attempt to make available to the American children in our religious schools such traditional, yet American, discussions of Jewish observances. I shall welcome any suggestions that will help me achieve that aim.
Did you ever go on a treasure hunt--the kind where somebody has hidden something and you and your friends go out to find it? It's a great deal of fun and quite an adventure, for you are never certain where your trail may lead or what you may find, but nevertheless you have the pleasant feeling that you will not return empty-handed.
We are going on the hunt together--you and I--and we have no intention of returning without valubable new possessions. The trail we are going to follow is quite a longone, for it covers about 3500 years of Jewish tradiiton and history. Somewhere along that road, in fact, are hidden many golden teachings and jewls of thought, and you and I shall join hands in finding them. Too many Jewish boys and girls pass right by without ever discovering them, and that is very unfortunate, both for them and for all the Jewish people.
