Since the begining of the twentieth century, but especially since the end of the 1st WW, a large number of nations, including Israel, gained or regained political independence. With the exception of Israel all these naitons lived in their respective countries at the time they acquired national sovereignty. The Jews in Palestine constitued a minority of Palestine's population when the State of Israel was established. The political independence which the Jews won in Palestine was accompanied by the liquidation of many centuries-old Jewish communites in various countries and the transfer of large numbers of Jews to Palestine. There is not another similar instance in the history of the world. What is the meaning of this extrordinary historical phenomenon? This work is an attempt to give an answer to this question.
