Among American jews, he was one of the foremost representatives of Conservative Judaism.

Though long a meticulous writer, he gradually stopped altogether the writing of his sermons in advance. If an idea is clear in the mind of a preacher, he should be able to deliver his message without notes, was his reasoning.

After the fatal Shabbat in 1966 when before the horrified eyes of his congregation he was shot by a disturbed youth, it was thought these inspiring sermons were lost. But mirculously, this proved not to be the case. FOr it was discovered that, unknown to the speaker himself, nearly all of his unwritten messages had been taped.
