"What I have sought to do in this volume is to provide an accounto of the State since its foundation not by means of a baldly chronological narrative, which would have been tedious to write, nor by an attempt to deal comprehensively with all developments during the life of the State, which would certainly have been indigestible to read and a little heavy for the reader to manhandle. Instead, I have selected aspects of Israel which seem to me to convey a prismatic view of what has been taking place since independence with the boundaries laid down by the armistice agreements of 1949."
