Plot

Fascinating history of four PA units -- from their design and build for the Santa Fe in 1947, their purchase by the Delaware & Hudson, and their remanufacture by Morrison-Knudsen in 1974-75 for use in passenger service when they became the PA4s. They went on to be used by Amtrak for the "Adirondack" before being sold to the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority for commuter service around Boston. These beautiful engines (which eventually ended their working life in Mexico) are given an in-depth treatment that will appeal to anyone who ever heard the growl of their engines or saw smoke pouring from their sides. Illustrated throughout with black and white photos that show the units in action over the years. Includes detailed technical information about the rebuild and comparisons with the PA-1. With map and decorative end papers. 127 pages.
