Alive & Present - Cultural Belonging in S.F. Chinatown & Manilatown
Alive & Present: Cultural Belonging in S.F. Chinatown and Manilatown is based on real contributors’ reflections on art, culture and belonging, as told in:
- Five personal histories: remembrances of special bonds with grandparents, family vacations, and memories of Manilatown and the I-Hotel
- Four Places of belonging including Stockton Street, Portsmouth Square, and a boba cafe.
- Favorite activities such as Lunar New Year, walking, listening, and—of course—eating!
- Three illustrated maps of 26 places of belonging.
By sharing what makes Chinatown special to each of us, we focus on the wonderful and diverse particulars that help us feel connected to a place and a community. We reveal what nourishes us, our neighborhood, and our sense of belonging.
