Developer Omega Force took suggestions from players around the globe. The result is a game that marks several major innovations for the franchise and its melee combat game engine, the "Character Group Battle Method.". Xtreme Legends features compelling new stories based on the Three Kingdoms novel. In what can be dubbed as a DW3 Remix, gamers can play Xtreme Legends by itself or combine it with the first Dynasty Warriors 3 (sold separately) to power up the original game with the new features in XL. Memory Card data is fully compatible between Dynasty Warriors 3 and DW3 Xtreme Legends.

• In Dynasty Warriors 3 Xtreme Legends, gamers can play as one of seven legendary generals: Lu Bu, Diao Chan, Meng Huo, Zhu Rong, Zhang Jiao, Dong Zhuo and Yuan Shao. These warriors were hidden characters in the original Dynasty Warriors 3, and their stories were left untold- until now. All of the stages from Dynasty Warriors 3 have been revamped with new scenarios and objectives.
• The approach to bodyguards has been re-examined and re-invented. Playable characters, including Lu Bu, can now be assigned as bodyguards. This adds a totally new dimension to the gameplay, allowing Double Musou Attacks in a one-player game. Players can also select the name, gender, uniform, and weapon for each guard in their unit. Battlefield orders for guards are also more detailed.
• Additionally, DW3XL will include four new Challenge modes, un-lockable 5th weapons and new items, and a new "Very Hard" Difficulty Level.
