One of ten children of the head cook at Riceland Plantation, eleven-year-old Hannah is sold as a slave to a kind Georgia family to help care for their expected baby. But when the mother and child die in childbirth, Hannah is sold to a cruel tavern owner who beats her often. She would have been unable to endure had it not been for the kindess of Miss Rachel, the lonely lady next door.
