Beleiving a giant creature will be found on a remote island, primate expert Jack Prescott (Jeff Bridges) stows himself away on an oil explorer bound for the mysterious destination. The Petrox Oil Company executive Fred Wilson (Charles Grodin), on the other hand, believes the island's fog bank to be proof that he'll strike oil there. On the way, the crew rescue a beautiful woman named Dwan (Jessica Lange) who was found floating unconsciously in a raft. On the island, the explorers discover proof of a native civilization, and the terror of a giant ape they worship in fear, King Kong. Kidnapped by the natives as a trophy for Kong, Dwan becomes the beast's captive object of perilous affection. The mission then turns to not only rescuing Dwan from the dangerous ape, but for Wilson to capture and exploit it by bringing Kong back to America as a showpiece.
