Fashion designer Melanie Carmichael (Reese Witherspoon) is engaged to one of New York's most eligible bachelors, Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey). The only thing standing between her fabulous new life as Mrs. Melanie Hennings is Jake Perry (Josh Lucas), the husband she left behind. Having transformed herself from an Alabama girl to a New York woman, Melanie must convince Jake to give her a divorce, something he is unwilling to do. She returns to her hometown of Greenville and finds that although she has grown accustomed to the bright lights of the big city, she is still a country girl at heart.
