From Booklist Every so often, a poet comes along who makes all the cliches of poetry seem profound and true again. Stainer is such a one. Her work elevates the mundane, illuminates the ordinary, transfigures speech with spirit, sounds again the primal word that transcends all language. Her work is not easy; sometimes we cannot even say with certainty what emotion her poems contain, whether "their answering intensities / are wounds or wide roses." But her complete and delphic authority demands that we attend to her, witness her "singing the rune."
