From Booklist Every so often, a poet comes along who makes all the cliches of poetry seem profound and true again. Stainer is such a one. Her work elevates the mundane, illuminates the ordinary, transfigures speech with spirit, sounds again the primal word that transcends all language. Her work is not easy; sometimes we cannot even say with certainty what emotion her poems contain, whether "their answering intensities / are wounds or wide roses." But her complete and delphic authority demands that we attend to her, witness her "singing the rune." Well regarded in her native Britain, Stainer is not well known here, but certainly deserves to be.
