Noelle Van Doren is through with her marriage to real estate developer Robert. But from this ruthless, charming man there's no such thing as a clean break. When he takes custody of their five year old daughter, Noelle finds she's is in for the fight of her life. Forced to turn to her estranged parents for help, Noelle, Mary, her aloof, high-powered mother, and Charlie, her father the local newspaper editor, join forces against Robert, whose power and charisma has fooled a whole region of upstate New York. Their frantic digging into Robert's past unearths a history of questionable relationships, most notably the dubious circumstances surrounding a high school sweetheart's suicide.To her astonishment, Noelle is able to find love again with a gentler, steadier man. For Charlie and Mary, separated so long ago by Mary's unexpected pregnancy at age seventeen, life has taken them down entirely different paths. But the love that brought them together as teenagers startles them with its persistence. In the midst of helping Noelle fight to keep her daughter, they re-discover a lasting bond that never should have been broken.
