Plot

Citizen Soldiers begins on June 7, 1944 and ends on May 7, 1945. In between are graphic re-enactments of the battles that finally defeated Germany. Ambrose draws on hundreds of interviews and oral histories from men on both sides who were there, and re-creates the experiences for the reader: fighting in the cold and wet, gruesome wounds, combat exhaustion, looting, and random destruction - the suffering of warfare. He describes how citizen soldiers overcame their fear and inexperience to win the war in a definitive book on the most important time frame in World War II.
