Prepared by the Scientific Committee 64-23 on Cesium in the Environment of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements, this report summarizes the current state of knowledge of radiocesium in the environment and aims to identify management issues concerning cesium 137 contamination of ecosystems. It contains a general review of knowledge about sources and levels, discussion of natural processes that explain the highly varied behavior of radiocesium in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, guidance for choosing transport parameters for dose and risk assessment models, and descriptions of approaches for mitigating the impacts of significant contamination.
