The widespread prevelance of violence and abuse in family life has only recently been acknowledged as a serious concern in Canada. Many abused children in this country are renoved from their families and placed in the care of the state sponsored child welfare system where they live in foster homes, grop homes, tratment centres and other kinds of placements. The sate in a very real and immediate sense becomes legal guardian and parent to these children and yourh. But what happens to victimized youngsters after they are made wards of the state? We too often assume that they are given the counselling, support services and other forms of treatment they need in order to cope with, and recover from, the potentially diabling impact of their experiences with abuse.
