By following the effects of the Holocaust through the experience of four individuals, the author gives face to millions of victims. The book traces the history of anti-Semitism, describes the experience of the Gypsies before and during the Holocaust and of other people deemed by the Nazis to be unworthy of life. The book pursues the themes of collaboration, indifference, obedience, dehumanization, resistance and rescue, and is lavishly illustrated with black and white photos.
