Gentleness and Grace
1 Peter 3:15 Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.
Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.
But how can we respect unbelievers? ..
2 Peter 2:7-8 and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked 8 (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)
Reasons to show respect..
Made in the image of God – Genesis 1:27
Little lower than angels – Psalm 8:3-6
Tongue is not to curse men – James 3:9-10
Sinners who need God’s mercy – Luke 18:11-12
Commend what is good…
Paul in the Synagogue in Antioch – Acts 13
They believed in the one true God …
They were familiar with the Old Testament and regarded it as the Word of God …
They knew the history of Israel …
They were expecting the Messiah …
Commend what is good…
Paul on Mars Hill in Athens …Acts 17
They were very religious people …
They had a desire to worship and know God ..
They believed God must be greater than men …
Building bridges today…
With churchgoers …
Do they believe in God?
Do they have some respect for the Bible?
Do they know and admire Jesus?
Do they acknowledge an afterlife and the possibility of judgment?
Building bridges today…
Not churchgoers but some spirituality …
Do they believe spirituality is important?
Do they see that materialism is inadequate to satisfy the heart’s longings?
Are they searching for inner peace?
Have they given up on the church to meet their spiritual needs?
Building bridges today…
Secular, cynical of religion …
Where do they put their trust (science, technology, human ability, goodness of fellow man, family)?
Recognize these are all God’s gifts to us, part of the created order…
Do they recognize some moral values, concern for moral breakdown?
Do they love their family, grandchildren?
