One night in 1977 is the worst of Royal Williams' life.

Black Velvet was ruptured, spilling her darkness and hatred into almost everybody in Astro City. The city's heroes could barely contain the rioting and large-scale chaos. But that's not what made it the worst.

Deke McMannus, long-time mob lieutenant made a play (backed by Pyramid) to topple all of the organized crime figures in the city, placing himself at the top. Royal's job with the Playtypus was gone, and the chaos was bound to be dangerous even for someone like him. That wasn't it either.

What made it the worst night of Royal Williams' life was that his brother was shot multiple times in the back by his partner, and other crooked police officers.
