Battling Aquaman in an attempt to save his son's life, Martian Manhunter begins to realize that things are not as they seem and that Ma'alefa'ak, his brother, has perverted his memories. Abandoning his subtle attempts at convinving J'onn that his friends hate him, Ma'alefa'ak instead more directly controls J'onn, showing him the ruins of a Metropolis that he and the Justice League failed to save. Finding himself in Gotham City, witnessing the murder of Batman's parents, J'onn is confronted by Batman who helps him realize that Ma'alefa'ak has taken control of him.In the real world, Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman battle the Ma'alefa'ak controlled J'onn until he captures Batman, forcing Superman to choose between killing J'onn or letting Ma'alefa'ak kill Batman. Inside J'onn's mind, he wanders, tired, until he finds the memories of his late wife and daughter.
