Charlie Brown is depressed. While his friends and family are enjoying the Christmas season, he can't seem to get into the spirit of the holiday. He can't help but feel that it's become too commercial. His baby sister is asking Santa for money, his friend Lucy wants real estate and even his dog, Snoopy, is entering light and display contests for a cash prize. On the advice of Lucy he joins the neighborhood Christmas pageant. There he struggles to create a traditional Christmas pageant as the director. When he becomes frustrated with his peers' idea of a pageant, he is assigned the task of getting the perfect Christmas tree with his buddy Linus. It's there that he discovers the Christmas spirit with a struggling tree and he strives to share it with his friends and family.

Linus (Christopher Shea) is sure that this year The Great Pumpkin will visit the pumpkin patch and he is determined to see the great event. When even his best friend Charlie Brown (Peter Robbins) doesn't believe in The Great Pumpkin, Linus writes a letter. When Halloween night rolls around, Linus forgoes trick-or-treating to wait in the pumpkin patch for the Great Pumpkin to appear. Charlie Brown, Lucy and the rest of the gang come to make fun of Linus' faith, but he invites them to join him anyway.

Linus is pushed to his limits when he learns grandma is coming to visit and plans on ridding him of his childish security blanket. As grandma’s arrival looms closer the Peanuts gang tries to help Linus learn to cope without his fuzzy crutch. Lucy is particular eager to cure Linus’ dependency using her own psychiatric techniques, and while Charlie Brown tries to help he just doesn’t have the heart to see Linus suffer. All the while Snoopy is constantly agitating matters because he wants the blanket for himself. In the end, insightful Linus points out that everyone has their own type of “security blanket” and in life a little security is a valuable thing.
