Sam (Hilary Duff) is left to live with her stepmother Fiona after her father dies. Sam is in high school, and Fiona makes her work at her father's old diner, which Fiona has turned into a cheesy restaurant. Sam begins having online conversations with Austin Aymes (Chad Michael Murray) and eventually Austin invites Sam to meet face-to-face at a school dance. Fiona makes Sam work at the restaurant late the night of the dance, but through the aid of two waitresses, she gets ready and attends the masquerade as a princess. She meets up with Austin, but has to leave quickly in order to get back to the restaurant. She drops her cell phone and the next day Austin searches for his lost princess. At a school pep rally, Austin's old girlfriend puts on a skit to humiliate her and show Austin who she actually is. At the end of the movie, Sam ends up moving in with a waitress at the diner, and then at a football game in the rain, reunites with Austin, kissing each other in the bleachers. She also discovers her father's will, which leaves everything to her and Fiona is no longer in charge.
