Üç Maymun
A simple but proud man attempts to do the right thing by taking the rap for his sleazy politico boss, but it sets in motion a train of events that tears his family asunder. No good deed goes unpunished in this latest meditative tour de force by Turkish auteur Nuri Bilge Ceylan, already a genuine master with just five features to his canon.
Best Director, 2008 Cannes Film Festival
If you ignore the truth, will it go away? This is the central theme of Three Monkeys, a film noir whose title refers to the adage: see no evil, speak no evil, hear no evil. Turkish filmmaker Nuri Bilge Ceylan won the 2008 Cannes Film Festival Best Director prize for this story about a politician who hits a pedestrian with his car and asks his driver to take the rap. Gradually the driver and his family discover their lies beget tragedy. More narrative than Ceylan`s previous Cannes favorites (Distant and Climates), Three Monkeys bears all his trademarks, including brooding cityscapes, a natural soundtrack, and breathtaking cinematography.
