The space spores John Jameson was exposed to greatly amplify his strength. When Spider-Man is seen robbing a bank, John heads out to bring him to justice. By the time they learn that Spider-Man didn't actually steal a dime, John is so worked up and ready to fight that he doesn't care about justice anymore, just the battle. The issue ends with Peter's first meeting with Mary Jane.
