While investigating oil thefts as Batman and Robin, a new ward named Lance Bruner arrives at Wayne Manor. Bruner's father knew Bruce's father, and the eldar Wayne had signed documents indicating that the Wayne family would care for Lance should anything happen to his parents. Bruner found it difficult to adjust, and kept playing juvenile pranks that Dick took the blame for. In an attempt to help him fit in, Dick convinced the Teen Titans to hang out with Lance in their civilian identities, but only succeeded in helping Lance find a criminal who'd help him fake his own kidnapping and ransom. Realizing that Bruce and Dick were also Batman and Robin, Bruner attempted to make inroads with the criminal community by setting them up. Seeing the two in action, he had a change of heart, and sacrificed his life to save Bruce's during the final confrontation with the oil thieves.
