The Enterprise stops to investigate strange glowing asteroids, only to find them inhabited. Though the residents originally claim to be survivors of a crash, the crew soon discovers they are actually prisoners, trapped on a rock doomed to explode, leaving it up to Spock to find a way to beam the landing party aboard without accidentally beaming up the criminals with them.
