The Enterprise is on Beta II, and they are searching for mineral deposits indentified in a long range survey that do not appear upon closer inspection. The crew is separated, and the Captain is attacked by a local creature. He shows signs of erratic behaviour upon returning to the Enterprise, some of which may jeopardize relations with a race whose ambassador is on board.
