The protagonist Harry Clifton fakes his death and assumes the identity of Tom Bradshaw, in order to protect the woman he loves. But on reaching New York, he is imprisoned on murder charges. When his lawyer ditches him, Harry realizes that he can save himself only if he reveals his true identity.
Emma, Harry's partner, gives birth to his child Sebastian and slowly begins to figure out that be Harry might still be alive. Meanwhile, in prison, Harry begins to write his book, A Diary of A Convict and documents his time in prison. To his horror he realizes that he has been duped by one of the inmates and he has been robbed of his book.
