The Klingon moon Praxis explodes, threatening their atmosphere, and the Empire must turn to their sworn enemy, the Federation, for help. James T. Kirk (William Shatner), once again commanding the Enterprise, is assigned to escort the Klingon Chancellor Gorkon (David Warner) to Earth. After a ceremonial dinner the Chancellor’s ship is fired upon apparently by Enterprise, and two Starfleet crewmen assassinate Gorkon during the resulting chaos. Kirk and Doctor McCoy (DeForest Kelley) fail to save Gorkon, and are arrested by the Klingons, tried, and sentenced to life on the frozen asteroid Rura Penthe. Kirk and McCoy attempt to escape but are betrayed by shapeshifter Martia (Iman). Sulu (George Takei), now Captain of the Excelsior, Spock, and the rest of the original crew rescue Kirk and McCoy in the nick of time. Spock (Leonard Nimoy) finds out that it was Klingon General Chang’s (Christopher Plummer )cloaked Bird of Prey that fired on Gorkon. Certain Starfleet officials have been conspiring with Klingons and Romulans to start a war. The Enterprise and the Excelsior then race to intercept General Chang, prevent the assassination of the Federation President (Kurtwood Smith), unmask the conspirators, and save the universe once again.
