When unusual weather patters start to erupt around the globe, London newspaper Daily Express assigns science reporter Bill Maguire (Leo McKern) and columnist Peter Stenning (Edward Judd) to investigate the situation. When Stenning romances Meteorological Center secretary Jeannie Craig (Janet Munro), to get answers, they discover that the truth is a frightening change in global conditions initiated by simultaneous nuclear blasts by the US and the USSR.
