The series formula started to kick in with this immediate sequel to Lethal Weapon, but that doesn't necessarily make it a weak movie. Joe Pesci joins the fold, Richard Donner directs again, and Mel Gibson and Danny Glover return as LAPD partners, their relationship smoother now that Gibson's character has recovered from his maddening grief over his wife's death. But the reckless Mel and cautious Danny equation, good for a million laughs, settles into place in this story involving a South African smuggler and a new girlfriend (Patsy Kensit) for Gibson. The movie is hardly comfy, though. The last act gets nasty, and a climactic fight between Gibson (who gets the worst of it) and some high-kicking villain is ugly. The DVD release includes production notes, Dolby sound, theatrical trailer, optional full-screen and widescreen presentations, optional French soundtrack, and optional English, French, and Spanish subtitles.

Riggs and Murtaugh are at it again in this sequel to the original Lethal Weapon in 1987. When a red BMW crashes while they are chasing it, they discover the trunk is full of South African Krugerands. Their boss assigns them to protect a federal witness named Leo Getz to try and keep them out of trouble. When the witness reveals he has been doing business with South Africans, the story evolves into a fast moving chase.

Los Angeles P.D. officers Roger Murtaugh and Martin Riggs are back, and this time they are chasing a thug in a red BMW. When the car crashes, several million dollars in Krugerand - South African currency - spill out of the trunk. After Murtaugh is ambushed in his home by a group of South African thugs, they speculate that the vehicle they were chasing may be linked. When their captain assigns them to guard a witness in a drug case, they soon find out that the drug dealers the witness was dealing with are South African diplomats hiding behind their immunity to carry out cocaine smuggling. Riggs also discovers that one of the consulate employees is in fact the murderer of his wife! After the thugs kill a consul secretary Riggs was in love with, and several fellow police officers are murdered by the diplomats, Riggs & Murtaugh exact angry, bloody revenge against the psychopathic drug-dealing diplomats...

Los Angeles police sergeant Roger Murtaugh and his partner, Sergeant Martin Riggs, are working on yet another drug-related case. Soon after finding one million dollars worth of South African Kruggerand in a crashed red BMW after a chase, Riggs and Murtaugh are assigned to keep an eye on Leo Getz, who is scheduled to testify in a case. There are people who don't want Leo to testify: a group of drug smugglers led by Arjen Rudd, the minister of diplomatic affairs for the South African consulate. Rudd turns out to be the man that Riggs and Murtaugh are after in the drug case they were working on before Leo was placed in their protective custody, which doesn't look very protective when Leo is kidnapped by Rudd's right hand man Pieter Vorstedt. Riggs ends up falling for Rudd's secretary Rika Van Den Haas, who doesn't like Rudd. In a confrontation with Vorstedt, Riggs is told the true circumstances behind the death of his wife Vicky, who died in a car crash in 1984: the car crash was caused by Vorstedt, who was supposed to have killed Riggs. Minutes after Vorstedt tries to kill Riggs, Riggs finds Rika dead, and this sends Riggs over the edge.

SYNOPSIS

After an initial car chase, a red BMW crashes and LAPD officers Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh discover the trunk is full of South African Krugerrands (gold coins which were illegal in the U.S. at the time due to the South African apartheid government).

Murtaugh is threatened at his home by South African thugs and Murtaugh and Riggs wonder if this is related to the find of the Krugerrands. The thugs' racist behavior towards Murtaugh is a clear metaphor for the apartheid government's abuse through its racial segregation in the country.

At one stage during the film Roger Murtaugh's family notices that he had the intention to eat a tuna sandwich, however was told not to continue eating his sandwich because the tuna was not deemed "dolphin safe".

When Murtaugh and Riggs are assigned to protect a Federal witness, Leo Getz (played by Joe Pesci), they discover Getz has been doing business with South African drug smugglers. The drug smugglers are led by Arjen Rudd, who is the minister of diplomatic affairs for the South African consulate in Los Angeles (who enjoys diplomatic immunity), and his enforcer Vorstedt.

While Leo and Murtaugh distract the guards, Riggs infiltrated the building and grab the paper saying, "Alba Varden". Then, he tells Rudd and his Gangs to leave his country and never come back. Then Riggs shoots the glass aquarium and leaves happy.

While investigating the South African diplomats Riggs falls for Rudd's secretary, Rika Van Den Haas, who does not care for Rudd.

While Riggs falls for Rika, Vorstedt kills Officers Tom Wyler, Meagen Shapiro, Tim Cavanaugh, and others.

While confronting Vorstedt, Riggs learns how his wife Vicky really died: Vorstedt caused the crash in 1984, while intending to kill Riggs instead. When Vorstedt attempts to kill Riggs, Riggs finds Rika drowned.

After this Murtaugh and Riggs exact a bloody revenge against the drug smugglers on the cargo ship, the Alba Varden. In the process, Vorstedt and Riggs get into a violent fight. Riggs stabs Vorstedt with his own knife and leaves him for dead, but Vorstedt grabs a gun and aims it at Riggs. In the nick-of-time, Riggs exacts his revenge by pressing a button on a control panel which drops a metal container and crushes Vorstedt.

Rudd appears behind Riggs and shoots him several times. Murtaugh sees this and aims his gun at Rudd. Rudd then exclaims, "Diplomatic immunity!" and holds up his ID. Murtaugh responds by shooting Rudd in the head and utters: "...it's just been revoked!"

Murtaugh goes to a dying Riggs and it turns out Riggs is fine. The two buddies laugh and joke as the sirens come for them in the background.

VersionRun Time
Theatrical Version1:54
UK Cinema Version1:48
Director's Cut1:58
  • To receive a 15 certificate, the UK cinema version was cut by the BBFC. These cuts included:
    • Reduced violence in the scene where Murtaugh kills two thugs with a nail gun (a shot showing blood on a thug's head was shortened and another showing nails embedded in the other thug's chest was optically darkened).

    • Most of the sex scene between Riggs and his girlfriend was cut.

    • Riggs' vengeful killing of the villains who killed his girlfriend on the pier was entirely cut.

    • Riggs' repeated shooting of a villain during the final shootout was reduced.

    • Kicks to Riggs' face by villain in climax were reduced.

  • Later video and DVD releases had some cuts waived but were raised to an 18, whilst retaining the edits of the pier killing and repeated shooting of a villain by Riggs. The cuts were fully waived in 2010 and the certificate downgraded to a 15. The uncut version is only available on Blu-Ray, while the DVD still has an 18 certificate but is missing the killing of the two thugs on the pier and of the guards on the container.

  • The newly released Director's Cut has over 3 minutes of extra footage
    • Riggs gets attention from some women at a hotel spa;

    • the exploding toilet sequence is lengthened and Murtaugh sees it hit his car;

    • Murtaugh gets information about bodywork on his car from a auto repairman;

    • Leo recalls a suspects address in a very unusual, humorous way.
