WSR Narrative Review
Story Synopsis:
Frozen in the 1960s, secret agent Austin Powers (Myers) is thawed back into action in 1997 to once again battle his arch-nemesis, Dr. Evil (Myers in a dual role). But first, this time-warped swinger must get hip quick and discover that there is no free love in the ’90s.
DVD Picture:
The picture quality is superb on both the DVD and LaserDisc with images that are sharp and detailed. Color fidelity is excellent with vibrant colors, natural fleshtones and deep, solid blacks. There is absolutely no noise or artifacts no doubt due to the pristine high definition transfer. The DVD in the component anamorphic mode exhibits incredible resolution and sharper image quality than the LaserDisc with purer color resolution. A scene approximately 8 minutes into the film jumps to the original 2.35:1 theatrical aspect ratio then back to the re-composed LaserDisc matted at 2.0:1 and DVD 1.90:1 letterbox and anamorphic aspect ratio.
Soundtrack:
Both the DVD/LaserDisc Dolby® Digital 5.1 discrete and PCM matrix Dolby Surround soundtrack on the LaserDisc are wonderfully thematic “James Bond” fun and well produced spatially with an aggressive surround that is preferred on the discrete versions.
