Story Synopsis:
Coppola’s stunning masterpiece is an audacious and passionately seductive version of the classic legend. Oldman’s extraordinary portrayal of a mysteriously sexual Dracula as he grows young to old, from man to beast, is an amazing metamorphosis. Ryder stars as Mina Murray, fiancée of Jonathan Harker (Reeves) and object of Dracula’s devastating desire as he believes she is his beloved wife reincarnated. His sole being as a vampire is set on their reunification as he sets out to reclaim her. Hopkins stars as the famed Dr. Van Helsing who dares to confront him.
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced Superbit 1.85:1 DVD is not a new transfer, so improvements over the previously released DVD are often subtle. While viewing the movie, the picture appears to have slightly improved overall clarity. However, under close scrutiny, fine details like the gold embroidered emblem on Dracula’s blood red robe (13:55) is perfectly defined on the Superbit version, while on the previous DVD, the emblem is considerably smeared. Still, even on the Superbit DVD, there are some scenes with softly focused images. Both versions exhibit excellent color fidelity, with nicely rendered fleshtones, rich hues, and endless blacks. The source element is revealing of some dirt, artifacts, and film grain. Edge enhancement is generally not a problem for either version, but details shimmer slightly on occasion. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack is a new encoding, and compared to the audio on the previous DVD, sounds a little more refined in terms of the low-end and spatial resolution. The DTS® Digital Surround™ audio on this new DVD is generally very similar to the Dolby Digital version, with seemingly just a slight edge in terms of spatiality, and the Dolby Digital audio delivering with a touch more in the low-end. The dated fidelity is apparent on occasion, especially with certain effects and the music score, but the dimensional scope of the soundtrack is certainly noteworthy. The sense of immersion is compelling throughout with the music, as well as the myriad of atmospheric effects. The soundstage simply seems to be very successful at involving the listener, with a fairly palpable deep bass presence, and the .1 LFE engaged sparingly. It should be noted that spurious dropouts can be noticed in the original audio. (Perry Sun)
