Story Synopsis:
Based on the book by Ted Hughes, The Iron Giant is an exciting yet gentle tale for young children about a boy who discovers a 50-foot-tall steel-eating giant from outer space. Hogarth Hughes (voiced by Eli Marienthal) tries to keep his new friend a secret from the government agents who have arrived in town to investigate some mysterious events. The Warner Bros. animation effort was nominated for 15 ‘Annie’ awards and received nine statues: Best Picture, Director, Writing, Voice Acting (Marienthal), Music, Character Animation, Effects Animation, Production Design and Storyboarding. Annie awards are sponsored by the Hollywood branch of the International Animated Film Society and were started 27 years ago by June Foray - most noted as the voice of Rocky The Flying Squirrel in the classic Jay Ward television show.
DVD Picture:
Animation at its best; eye-popping and exciting. Viewed through the component video output, this anamorphically enhanced DVD picture is absolutely stunning. Colors are vivid and jump off the screen. When viewed on a properly calibrated display you'll be mesmerized by the dynamic deep blacks exhibited here. The DVD measures 2.30:1, anamorphic and letterbox.
Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel discrete soundtrack is fantastic, with a pleasant sound to the ears at reference level that is refined and free of excessive harshness. The entire soundtrack was obviously crafted without production sound as a reference, since the film is animated. With that in mind, the selection and incorporation of Foley and sound effects is effective and never disengaging from the experience of the film. The dialogue is presented at a comfortable listening level. Directional sound effects are aplenty, utilizing the screen and split surround channels, therefore placing you in a 360-degree soundspace. The film delivers deep and powerful low frequencies extending to below 25Hz in all channels! The music by Michael Kamen is of remarkable audio quality, with an engaging presence.
