Notes

Story Synopsis:
From the unique mind of comic book creator Bob Burden come Mystery Men, seven second-string superheros determined to prove their worth in the crime fighting game. Alas, their home town, Champion City, already has a superhero in residence. But, when Captain Amazing (Kinnear) is captured by an evil madman (Rush), the blue collar crew spring into action to show Champion City-and the world-their highly specialized superheroic powers. There’s Mr. Furious (Stiller) who’s really, really angry; Blue Raja (Azaria) who foils his foes with cutlery-when it’s okay with his mom; The Bowler (Garafalo) who seeks to avenge the death of her father with a bowling ball that houses the skull of her murdered pop; Invisible Boy who’s only invisible when no one’s looking; The Shoveler (Macy), who can dig with lightning speed and wields his spade like a Ninja’s sword; Sphinx (Studi), whose never-ending clichés and philosophizing might possibly irritate a bad guy into submission and finally, The Love Child Of Love Canal: The Spleen (the inimitable Paul Reubens), who fends off his oppressors with noxious odious emissions.

DVD Picture:
The dual layered, anamorphically enhanced DVD takes place almost entirely at night, with the darkest scenes exhibiting exceptional contrast and shadow delineation. However, the entire picture is just a tad on the dark side, but when viewed in a completely blackened room one will appreciate the vibrant colors in contrast with the deepest blacks. The picture is sharp and detailed, with fine background definition and exceptional clarity. Though the picture has a slight "digital" appearance with minor pixelization and occasional artifacts, it will surely please. The DVD measures 1.85:1, anamorphic and letterbox.

Soundtrack:
The Dolby® Digital discrete 5.1 soundtrack is a terrific sonic presentation that provides an essential aspect of the entertainment offered by this film. The soundfield energizes with multidimensional sound effects that aggressively utilize the split surrounds. The fidelity overall is first-rate, and the audio, while having an aggressive presence, should not be overpowering. Even in scenes that don’t feature action, the listening space is always expansive and holosonic. This audio experience can be further enhanced through the use of a back surround channel decoder, such as the SMART® Devices Center Surround 3X™, used for this review, which opens up the surround soundfield, and seems to fill in the gap between the left and right surrounds. The soundtrack also features deep, clean, penetrating bass with both music and effects, and extending to below 25Hz in all channels. The music score is a superb recording, and fully permeates the sonic environment from all directions. Disco fans should be glad to notice the excerpts of disco music, reprocessed in 5.1 with substantial bass enhancement. The sound effects editing for this film, namely the creative selection and incorporation of various sounds, is an essential contributing factor to the entertainment offered by the soundtrack. The dialogue is quite well-produced, with voices sounding natural, and good integration with the visual environments. If you’re looking for something to really fire up your home theatre system, and at the same time want a fun experience with a movie, don’t miss this one!
