Story Synopsis:
As young boys, Jimmy (Penn), Dave (Robbins), and Sean (Bacon) were seldom apart, until a horrific event shattered Dave’s innocence and altered their lives forever. Years later, after Jimmy’s daughter was found brutally murdered, the three mens’ paths crossed yet again. The winner of two Academy Awards, "Mystic River" is based on the novel by Dennis Lehane. (Tricia Littrell)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 2.40:1 DVD picture exhibits a desaturated color palette with a gritty appearance that is complementary to the storytelling. Within the darker scenes, shadow delineation is well balanced. Images are sharp and nicely detailed, though some scenes appear somewhat soft at times. Edge enhancement and pixelization are minimal in this excellent presentation. (Suzanne Hodges)
Soundtrack:
This highly-regarded (and rightfully so) Academy Award®-nominated film deserves a great DVD soundtrack, and this Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel soundtrack delivers. Dialogue reproduction is as accurate as you will find, with excellent placement within the listening space. The front three screen channels handle most of the sonic information with excellent channel separation and horizontal panning across these channels. The subwoofer and surround channels are used at just the right moments to effectively expand the spatial soundstage, especially in the later chapters. The original score is very effective and musically translates the sad, sorrowful, and emotionally charged and somber tone wonderfully. Most of the soundtrack is quiet and filled with dialogue, but when the score plays it really adds substance. (Jeffrey Kern)
