The Enterprise is caught in a cosmic storm and is forced to return to earth for repairs. There, McCoy with Kirk tagging along go to visit his daughter, Barbara, who is a xenozoologist at Urey University, where they are unloading the first mature vrell on earth, a telepathic alien animal. Meanwhile a disgraced former crewmember of the Enterprise plots revenge on Kirk and his ship but with the help of Scotty and the vrell the scheme is thwarted.
