Despero heads towards Earth in a space ship, planning the destruction of the Justice League.
As new leader of the League, Batman insists on pushing the younger members hard. Gypsy mentions that Zatanna is missing but J'onn J'onnz claims she is likely still searching for her friend while he continues the murder investigation he began in his Detective John Jones identity. Using the newly installed teleporters, J'onn continues the investigation, not realising Gypsy follows him.
Zatanna, meanwhile, has been kidnapped by a cult leader called Adam and her friend is a willing accomlice. Adam plans to use Zatanna's blood to extract her DNA which he will then inject into himself to boost his limited magical powers.
Gypsy helps J'onn gather information for his murder case while Steel, on a date, prevents his girlfriend from being knocked over prompting him to tell her about himself.
Despero finds the JLA satellite abandoned and in ruins and drops to Earth.
