Andrew Sterling (Samuel L Jackson) is a fine upstanding citizen, who is a very successful professional writer. He is also black and when he purchases a vacation home in a small rural area of New England he is mistaken by the local police chief as a criminal. Cecil Tolliver (Dabney Coleman) is the chief of police, and when he realizes that he has made a mistake he must find a way to correct it so he sends in Amos O'Dell (Nicolas Cage). Amos is a local small time crook who is in jail at the time and Tolliver sends him in to make it look as though the police have not made a huge mistake by pretending to kidnap Andrew. Before long Amos and Andrew realize that they are both in trouble and must figure out how to escape the crazy situation that they have gotten in to.
